I was informed on Monday that CL Plaza has leased our used book sale storefront. We are asked to be off the premises by this weekend.
Since deciding seven years ago that holding the FOCLL used book sale at the library was no longer feasible, we've been running a labor-intensive, off-site sale through the generous loan of empty storefronts by the owners of Crystal Lake Plaza. We always understood that our space could be lost if it were leased. We can be pleased for the owners that they are now able to lease spaces that have sat empty for a very long time. Over the years, we have built up a store-size, comprehensive sale (and recycling effort) and have became a favorite in the area for dealers and book lovers from McHenry County and a broad surrounding area. Of that we can be enormously proud.
FOCLL's Board and Used Book Sale Committee have decided that the challenges of another move - i.e. locating a donated site, interim storage, redesign of sale space and tenuousness of occupancy - are more than we want to undertake.
Though we are suspending the used book sale, the Friends of the CL Library will remain viable through our other planned fundraisers. We would like to resume used book sales when a new library provides that opportunity. Since such a time is uncertain, we have decided that storing larger items, such as tables and book carts, is unwise.
We have been given a weekend deadline to remove our items from #15. I am calling for help tomorrow, Thursday, October 6, 1pm till whenever we finish, to sort, redistribute and dispose of our "collection." We especially have many cardboard boxes (without lids). They're yours if you can use them. There are also several odd-sized tables, a computer table, our "horseshoe" (in three sections) that would work beautifully as a serving area/bar or worktop, and other items that may strike your fancy.
I have a call in to Savers for a possible pick-up of some furniture on Friday. I will also be at #15 for a time on Friday, if you can't make it Thursday. A Bagster will be used to dispose of remaining unwanted items.
I know that we all, Committee and volunteers alike, will miss the enjoyable experiences and incredible friends and acquaintances we've made among those singular individuals, who find such pleasure in being quite literally buried in books.
